Finally, it has arrived in the post this week! Definitely worth the wait. This is a great book detailing the late Colin Fulcher’s graphical works (aka Barney Bubbles). If you’re not familiar with Barney, but you’re into the music of the 70s and 80s, you’ve most probably seen his artwork on various well known album covers.
I got to know of Barney’s work through my love of UK space rockers Hawkwind, Barney did most of their early designs and collaborated in big way on the Space Ritual tour stuff. This book however is a true ode to Barney’s skill as an all-round artist and designer; He didn’t have the distinct signature style that a lot of the famous album cover designers of the era locked themselves into, but went for a more commercial and versatile approach which displays quite an incredibly diverse talent and mastery of various mediums. A great foreword by Peter Saville and Billy Brag; this book is a comprehensive lesson in innovation and creativity.
